The Order of First Families of Virginia’s purpose is “to promote historical, biographical and genealogical researches concerning Virginia history during the period when she was the only one of the thirteen original colonies.”

The Order carries out a number of activities aligned with this mission, including:

  • The publication of works detailing Virginia genealogy, including four editions of the definitive volumes Adventurers of Purse and Person: Virginia 1607-1624/5.
  • The support of research and education about Colonial America
  • The awarding of merit-based scholarships for graduate students who study and deepen understanding of the foundational history of the United States

The Kenneth Callaway King, Jr. Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate student of exceptional merit for the study and research of Colonial American History at The College of William & Mary.
